Beckton, London
Newham · E6 · Ward: Beckton (E05013904) · Constituency: West Ham and Beckton
Beckton is a residential suburb in the Royal Docks area of the London Borough of Newham (E6/E16), built in the 1980s on land formerly occupied by the Beckton Gas Works. It sits between the A13, the Royal Docks waterfront, and Barking. The area has a large retail park, a DLR station, and several major employers including Britvic's soft drinks factory and the Beckton Sewage Works (the largest in Europe). Since the 2012 Olympics, property prices have surged across Newham, driving out many long-term residents and bringing successive waves of new arrivals from Eastern Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East. The population turns over rapidly — one resident described it as a 'conveyor belt of changing people.' Community infrastructure has not kept pace: old community centres have closed, the former dry ski slope on the slag heap is derelict, and people describe a car-dependent neighbourhood where you shop and leave without talking to anyone.
